Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist Service in Cork
Parkinson’s Ireland is delighted to announce the appointment of a Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist in Cork. This is the first community-based Parkinson’s nurse role that has been created in Cork. The service will operate from Carrigaline Primary Care Centre.
Charlotte Deasy has joined Parkinson’s Ireland from the NHS where she was an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.
This Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist service will be available to people with Parkinson’s and their loved ones in all of County Cork.
It is estimated that there are approximately 18,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Ireland, a number which is on track to double by 2040.
Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological disorder, and is classified as a Movement Disorder, as it primarily affects movement. It is variable in its progression, meaning some people progress more slowly than others and the symptoms can be effectively controlled with medication for many years.
There are over 40 symptoms associated with Parkinson’s Disease and they vary from person to person.
Parkinson’s Nurse Specialists are an essential aid to those living with Parkinson’s Disease. They give advice on medication and the many symptoms associated with Parkinson’s Disease and for those newly diagnosed, they are a lifeline to help someone come to terms with their diagnosis.
Having access to a nurse is a huge help to those living with Parkinson’s Disease, their care partners and health professionals. The advice, knowledge and care our nurse specialist give is central to the work we do to help people manage their symptoms to continue to live their day to day lives.
The Chief Executive Officer of Parkinson’s Ireland, commented on the news: “We are delighted with this development, as there are only a small number of Parkinson’s specialist nurses in the HSE and in Ireland overall. As of December 2024, there were also no Parkinson’s nurses available in Cork University Hospital. This service is a model for other parts of the country, by delivering care in the community using the concept of integrated care. We are delighted to have Charlotte on board and look forward to continuing to expand our work in County Cork. I would also like to pay tribute to the work that our local Cork branch does in delivering local services in County Cork.”
Ted Horgan, our beloved Cork Branch Chairman Emeritus, was absolutely thrilled to have been honoured by Charlotte as her “Patient no.1” in visiting the clinic in Carrigaline recently.
As Parkinson’s is one of most Care intensive conditions in the community, the benefit of this appointment is significant said Ted, who lives in nearby Riverstick.
The service will be based in Carrigaline Primary Care Centre, Kilnaglery, Carrigaline, Co. Cork.
The service is appointment only. An appointment can be requested by phoning 1800 359 359 or by emailing nurse@parkinsons.ie
