Funding Announced for Additional Consultant Neurologists

Parkinson’s Ireland welcomes the recent announcement of €2 million of funding for the expansion of neurology services.

It has been promised that this investment will fund the recruitment of five additional consultant neurologists and a clinical support member, to complete hospital-based neurology cover nationally. It has been confirmed that the additional consultants will be based in University Hospital Kerry, Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise, Wexford General Hospital, Mayo University Hospital and Letterkenny University Hospital. A recent investment in services at Bantry Hospital in Cork has also taken place.

Parkinson’s Ireland and its members played an active part in the campaign for these additional neurologists. We would like to thank our members, Martina Sinnott and John McDonnell who spoke as lived experience representatives at the campaign launch events for Portlaoise and Castlebar hospitals. In addition to this, John and Caroline McLoughlin, our Mayo Branch Chairperson, attended the AV room of Leinster House with our CEO, to campaign on this issue on the 24th of April 2024.

While this funding is welcome, it is critical that these roles are advertised as soon as possible by the HSE so that there is no delay in these services being set up. You can read the full press release here.
